  • Academic Technology Approval Scheme (ATAS)

Academic Technology Approval Scheme (ATAS)

From 21 May 2021, relevant international researchers applying for permission to enter or stay in the UK under the Skilled Worker visa, Government Authorised Exchange visa (Temporary Work), or Visitor visa routes must apply for an ATAS certificate.

ATAS seeks to prevent the transfer of information, knowledge or technology that could develop, advance or support an Advanced Conventional Military Technology (ACMT) and Weapons of Mass Destruction (WMD) programme or their means of delivery.

ATAS applies to all international students and researchers (apart from exempt nationalities) who are subject to UK immigration control and intend to study or research at the postgraduate level in certain sensitive subjects.

Those subject to the ATAS requirement joining the University on a Skilled Worker or GAE visa must provide an ATAS certificate before a Certificate of Sponsorship (CoS) can be assigned.

Applications for a Standard Visitor visa (academic category) do not require an ATAS certificate before submitting a visa application. However, the visit/access to University premises cannot begin until the certificate is provided to International Staff Support. It is therefore recommended that visitors obtain an ATAS certificate prior to travelling to the UK.

ATAS is not required for visitors attending conferences, meetings, interviews, workshops and the like.

ATAS applications are free of charge, however, take at least 30 working days (six full weeks) to process. You should therefore submit your ATAS application as early as possible.

Where applicable, International Staff Support will request that an ATAS research statement form be completed by the line manager/PI/host academic, which will be provided to the applicant to facilitate their application.
